There was a huge base of Cutler-Hammer panels installed before Eaton introduced the twin breaker, there is a 9.5 out 10 chance that a C-H panel is not listed for use with twins, a easy way to tell is to install a twin in a panel, if it is NOT securely latched to the rail, & flops around, the twin is not intended to be used there, which is the case for most C-H/Eaton . Eaton- Eaton, Cutler Hammer BR Cutler hammer CH- CH only Cutler hammer BR- Cutler hammer BR Challenger- Challenger, Cutler hammer BR Bryant- Bryant, Cutler hammer BR Westinghouse- Westinghouse, Cutler hammer BR Seimens- Seimens Ite- Ite, Seimens Crouse hinds- Crouse hinds, Seimens Murray- Murray Gould- Gould, Seimens General Electric- GE
My old 60s Square D panel on my house is the same general arrangement. The original 100A Q1 2100 main breaker spread across the top taking both spaces. Bryant became a subsidiary of Westinghouse in 1901 and remained one till that part of Westinghouse was bought by Cutler Hammer, now Eaton. All Bryant/Westinghouse/CH BR breakers can be replaced with Eaton BR types in Non CTL panels.
We generally use the Cutler Hammer BR series all in one 200 amp for residential services. The door hinge is better/easier to remove on the Siemans but the lugs on the CH neutral busses are larger and accept the #4 wire with ease. The deadfront on the Siemans has a retainer at the top which makes it fit a little cleaner. Its been almost 30 years, maybe longer, since I've used CH. I just found out that that my local supplier is now carrying Cutler Hammer. So, because I really liked CH back in the day and since I'm doing a major renovation at my house, along with a panel change, I thought I'd get one. Well, it don't look anything like the CH panel I knew.
have a new built home as of July 2007 which has 2-200 amp Cutler Hammer electrical panels. On Monday, March 2,2009 the main breaker on one of the panels tripped. The reason the breaker tripped was because it was overheating/melting. We called the fire department and our electrician. There is a riser running thru the panel and the feed is gutter tapped. Since the riser runs thru the panel replacing the enclosure is a real challange. I read some where that there were replacement guts made by cutler hammer, for federal pacific panels but never heard of . Recommend always carry a box of 1/4-20 x 1/4" RHMS ( per 25 at Home Depot or whatever), 1/4-20 tap, drill bit set, and cordless drill. Advantages: 1) They will probably not strip out a 1/4-20 screw.
